Flu season is in full swing, which means you can be at an increased risk for flu and flu symptoms like coughing, sneezing and high fevers at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. Besides the obvious precautions like washing your hands, considering a flu shot, and staying hydrated, there are a number of ways you can flu-proof your FAMU apartment to keep your chances of catching the flu as low as possible and make sure you don't waste all your excused absences in one fell swoop!
1. Create a quarantine area
If someone in your apartment caught the flu, it may feel like you will inevitably catch it too. To decrease the chances that everyone catches it, create a quarantined area for the sick roommate to rest and recover. Then, avoid this area like the plague, literally. If you live in a 2-bedroom apartment or larger, ask them to stay in their bedroom as much as possible. Also try to avoid contact with them via towels and blankets.
2. Clean the bathroom daily
If you have more than one bathroom, designate one as the "sick bathroom." If that's not possible then clean the bathroom as often as you can, ideally daily, to keep germs from spreading.
3. Increase ventilation
Another tip is to increase ventilation to make sure fresh air is always circulating in your FAMU apartment. Luckily, winters in Florida aren't too cold, so you can open some windows and switch on ceiling fans without freezing.
4. Clean linens as often as possible
Linens such as towels, sheets and throw blankets hold on to germs. To keep the germs from taking over your entire FAMU apartment, wash your linens with hot water every few days while someone is sick. If you live in a utilities included or all-inclusive apartment, this won't rack up your monthly bill. If you pay a separate utility bill and are worried about spending too much by using your apartment's washer and dryer, just try to avoid "hugging" your linens (i.e. don't snuggle your face into that cozy throw blanket).
5. Wipe down surfaces
Tabletops, countertops, doorknobs, phones and any other surface in your FAMU apartment should be wiped down with a good disinfectant as often as you think of it.
